Many patient need to see a doctor for abdominal pain ay some point of their lives. The following symptoms and conditions commonly occur in men and women of all ages. The commonest of these is indigestion and/or reflux, which is abdominal pain caused by the excess production of stomach acid. Most of these symptoms are often benign, and can be easily treated. Some however may be the first signs of more serious conditions and therefore need to be investigated. This usually means an upper GI endoscopy or gastroscopy (see Endoscopy section).
Once diagnosed, treatments in the form of medicines will often control these symptoms. In some conditions, if the abdominal pain persists, a referral to a surgeon may be necessary.
