Dr. Jim Portal – Consultant Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist in Bristol

I am a consultant gastroenterologist and Hepatologist (gut and liver specialist doctor, hepatobiliary medicine). My NHS practice is based at University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust, which includes the Bristol Royal Infirmary. I also hold practice privileges at both the Spire Hospital (Wednesday evenings) and The Nuffield Chesterfield (Thursday evenings), offering a full range of services which include the investigation and treatment of gut and liver related health problems, such as indigestion, change in bowel habit, abdominal pains, fatty liver disease and cirrhosis. I also provide a full endoscopy service, at both sites, offering upper GI endoscopy (gastroscopy),lower GI endoscopy (colonoscopy) and ERCP (bile duct endoscopy) – my main aim being to make the procedure as comfortable and as dignified for the patient as possible. I work hand in glove with my surgical and radiological colleagues, in order to provide a first class, multi-disciplinary approach to patient care.

I hope you find the following information useful, but should stress it is a guide and not an alternative to seeking medical advice from a fully trained gastroenterology  specialist doctor. Please feel free to contact me for further information or for an appointment.
